Logic Lane
There are five participants in a furniture workshop, and each person successfully
created a different item (including a hutch), using a different type of wood (in one
case, maple). From the information provided, determine the project each participant
made from each type of wood.
Ms Pam made the cabinets, but she didn’t use cedar, oak or walnut.
Ms Dam (who used pine) didn’t make the bookcase, table, or chest.
Ms Bam (who didn’t make either the chest or table) didn’t use either cedar or
walnut.Mr Sam didn’t use cedar. Mr Ham didn’t make the chest.

Calculating day of the year
Step: Day of a particular year is calculated using the following formula:
Month Code (M) + Date (D) + Year Code (Y) = X
The day corresponds, to the value of X, where Monday = 1, Tuesday = 2, Wednesday = 3, Thursday = 4, Friday = 5, Saturday = 6 and Sunday = 0/7.
If X is more than 7, divide X by 7 and the remainder of this division is the revised value of X. Note the following:
Note 1: Month codes are given by the following number: 622503514624, where 6 on the left extreme is the code for January, and subsequent digits correspond to respective months in that sequence only, such that Y on the extreme right is the code for December.
Note 2: For a leap year the month codes for January and February are 5 and 1 respectively, and they remain the same for all these months.
Note 3: Year Code (Y) is calculated using the following formula:
Years + Leaps + Century Code – Max multiple of 7 = Y
If Y is more than 7, divide it by 7 and the remainder of this division is the revised value of Y.
Century Codes are as follows:
1600 – 0
1700 – 5
1800 – 3
1900 – 1
2000 – 0
For example, year code for 1979 is calculated as under:
Years = 79 [last two-digits of the year in consideration]
Country Code = 1
Leaps = 19 [divide 79 by 4; the quotient is the value of leaps]
Max multiple of 7 = 77 [corresponds to maximum multiple of 7 in the last two-digits of the year in consideration i.e. 79]
→ Year code for 1979 →79+19+1-77 = 22, Since 22 is more than 7, divide by 7, the remainder is 1, which is the year code for 1979
Example 1: What day of the year was September 12, 1978?
Month Code (M) for September is 4 (the 9th digit in the sequence 622503514624)
Date (D) = 12
Year code (Y) for 1978 is calculated as under:
Years = 78
Leaps = 19
Century Code = 1
Max multiple of 7 = 77
→Year Code (Y) = 78+19+1-77 = 21
Divide 21 by 7; remainder is 0, which is the value of Y.
→X = M+D+Y = 4+12+0 = 16
Since, X is more than 7, divide it by 7
→Remainder is 2, which corresponds to second day of the week i.e. Tuesday
Answer = Tuesday
Note 4: Leap year is a year which is a multiple of 4. However, multiples of 4 which are also multiples of 100 are not leap years. Further, multiples of 4 and 100, which are also multiples of 400 are again leap years. For example, 1624 is a leap year because it is a multiple of 7; 1800 is not a leap year because it is a multiple of 100; however, 2000 is a leap year because it is a multiple of 400.

Quotable Quotes - Discipline
“What lies in our power to do, lies in our power not to do.”
― Aristotle
“Self-respect is the fruit of discipline; the sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself.”
― Abraham Joshua Heschel
“Seek freedom and become captive of your desires. Seek discipline and find your liberty.”
― Frank Herbert
140 Pounds
At his heaviest, Deandre Upshaw weighed 400 pounds. Even though he always felt fairly confident about himself despite his weight, he admits that he didn’t particularly like how his body looked in the mirror.
He was always a fashion enthusiast and didn’t want to spend his life wearing plus sized clothes. In the past, Upshaw had tried to lose weight on many occasions by following exercise regimes and diet charts. “The problem with all of these diets and plans is that they had expiration dates,” said Upshaw. “They were all extreme.” Even when he lost significant weight by participating in boot camps and detoxification programs, he soon went back to eating the foods that he had deprived himself of.
Upshaw saw a pattern and realized the way in which he was losing weight off and on was not sustainable. He had to come up with a plan which could guarantee long term success. He soon enlisted a list of conditions that would make him achieve his goal and maintain a healthier lifestyle. For him this meant no short cuts. He also knew that his new plan had to be more food focused since he didn’t really enjoy exercising.
And so, in September 2015, he went all in. He maintained a food diary to keep a strict track of calories, monitored his exercise, sleep patterns and water intake. Every week he assessed his progress honestly and set next week’s milestone. “Whenever I got discouraged, I’d chant a mantra to myself: No matter what, this time next year, I will be a different person,” recalled Upshaw.
Through his 365 day weight loss process, he’s lost a total of 140 pounds, has learned a lot about himself, and the value of discipline. One of the most valuable lessons he’s learned looking back is the difference between discipline and motivation. “Motivation is easy to tap into when things are going well,” said Upshaw. “It’s easy to feel motivated when the scale is moving. But discipline, that’s where the magic is!”
You cannot achieve anything in life by just thinking about it; you must get out there and consistently do work that brings you closer to your goals.
